Who were the ancient Greeks? What were their lives like? What did they care about, and what did they believe? In this institute, you will work to answer these questions and more as you examine the rich culture and literature of the ancient Greeks through those they considered heroes and heroines. You will read Ancient Greek epic poetry and tragic plays as you explore the great heroes and heroines of Greek mythology—like the wrathful Achilles, tricky Odysseus, stubborn Antigone, and beautiful Helen. What made these figures, who had what we might consider serious flaws, heroes and heroines of the Greek tradition? Can these serious flaws be their greatest strengths? What attributes do those we call heroes and heroines today share with these ancient figures? After two weeks of interactive activities, creative projects, critical reading, and class discussions, you should leave the course with a greater understanding of three things: ancient Greek culture, the impact that this culture has on our modern world, and what constitutes a “hero” and “heroine” in the Greek mind.

If you are looking to build critical thinking and research skills while learning to appreciate the differences and similarities between the ancient and modern world this is program is ideal for you.

High School Summer Institute students live on campus in one of our top-ranked, air-conditioned residence halls. In addition to course work, students participate in specialized college readiness, community, and academic success enrichment activities.
