Great Books & Big Ideas Programs on the campus of Stanford tend to feature some world literature such as Borges and Murakami but also explore Greek and Roman classics, American writers, and European philosophers. Faculty sponsor, Dr. Rob Reich, typically joins us for one of the highlight seminars of the program each summer. Stately palms and beautiful weather make this the perfect locale for camp. And with new curriculum and a wide variety of readings each week, students can stay for a one, two, or three-week program and even add Writer's Workshop too.

Are you able "Think Big"? To see and "get" the Big Picture? Are you fascinated by strategy in sports, business, games, geo-politics? Can you summon the vision and disciplined thinking to bring a powerful idea to fruition? In this dynamic week, Professor Schumacher will guide us as we come to deeply understand the challenges, long odds, and ultimate triumphs of real-life heroes and visionaries. What would the world be like without large structures? We would need to take ferries across every river because there would be no bridges. We wouldn’t have stores, school buildings, large office buildings, stadiums, etc. Large structures are everywhere, and civil engineers must ensure that they remain safe and that the materials that make up structures have expected strengths. In this camp, participants will learn about structures and materials they are made of through engaging hands-on projects. It is anticipated that students will compete to build the strongest model structure or the strongest concrete beam. Students will gain a fresh understanding and appreciation of the structures they use every day. No prior experience is required.
