NYC - Climate Change in the News: Reporting on the Environment [Term 2] (Commuter)

It is increasingly apparent that the earth’s climate is transforming. We read, see and hear about it in the news and in our everyday lives, and each person has a role in climate action and change. The current climate situation has an immediate and future impact on the world, and it falls to the generations here today to take action to preserve the planet for the future. This course will cover the factors affecting the climate crisis, the current challenges and potential solutions. It will also look at how climate change is reported on and covered in the news. Students will examine career fields associated with environmental studies, how environmental and climate policies are developed, and the impact of the climate crisis on personal health and the health of the planet. This course is intended for students with experience in journalism, or those interested in different ways to cover environmental science and the climate. Students will reflect on their own relationship with the environment as well as explore the foundations of climate journalism. They will apply what they have learned as they produce multiple journalism pieces, which may include a news article, op-ed, product review or investigative piece.
