The world of home conversational AI (intelligent voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home) spans multiple areas. Learning about privacy and security issues and leveraging advances in these areas is the central focus of this course. Throughout the course, students will learn about intelligent voice agents, how they work, who they work for, and examine privacy and security issues in the voice ecosystem all by using them in the classroom. Because these systems are open in nature, rely on AI, and use a variety of technologies they are particularly interested to explore vulnerabilities.

Terp Young Scholars delivers an academic experience that is at the forefront of theory, thought, and technology. Scholars attend class, learn about career opportunities, study, work on projects, prepare for exams, and interact with their equally talented peers in a rigorous academic setting. Classes generally meet for three hours a day between 9am-1pm, Monday – Friday. Acceptance is competitive, and based upon academic performance and recommendation. Terp Young Scholars also offers afternoon, evening, and weekend activities that provide a glimpse of UMD’s rich campus life. Seminars include sessions with Undergraduate Admissions, Learning Assistance Services, and The Observatory. Workshops feature Zumba, Yoga, Drawing, Bodycombat, and Salsa. Social activities include a weekend day-trip to Washington, DC, pool parties, mixers, ice cream social (with UMD ice cream), movies, and more.
