This advanced experimentation institute gives adacemically talented and motivated students an opportunity to engage in hands-on science research projects of their own choosing in the field of virology. Using bioinformatics (science at the intersection of biology, computer science and statistics), high-school students will participate in daily virtual sessions where they will discover how their biology knowledge can be leveraged with big data analysis tools to analyze data sets to discover an answer to a question of their own choosing. The resulting research can be used to enter scientific competitions/science fairs in the next school year. Real-life and current examples of how bioinformatics tools are used to help scientists understand the COVID-19 virus will be the subject matter during training. Full scholarships and financial aid are available. The program runs daily M-F from June 1- June 26, 2020. A computer and internet access will be required and may be provided if the student doesn't have the resources. Biology knowledge is helpful. No experience in bioinformatics is required. Students will be provided with pre-institiute study materials as well as matched to a mentor for personalized support.
